Charcoal Art

Charcoal is the oldest drawing material there is, and still the most direct. It smudges, lifts and darkens under the hand, so the drawing is built and rubbed back and built again — which is why a charcoal work carries a sense of the hand that made it in a way cleaner media do not. It gives the deepest blacks available on paper, and the range between that black and bare white paper is what makes charcoal so good at faces, form and light. On a wall it is serious without being cold, and because it is tonal rather than coloured, it never argues with a room’s palette.

Every charcoal drawing at House of Art is an original, drawn by hand on artist-grade paper, fixed and signed, supplied mounted and framed under glass with a certificate of authenticity. Sizes run from small studies to larger framed works, with commissions drawn to your subject.
