Cymbidium Orchid
A cymbidium orchid photographed close enough to read the speckled crimson of its lip against soft amber petals. Signed archival print, framed and ready to hang.
This is a cymbidium at very close range, framed so tightly that a single bloom fills the picture and the rest of the spray falls away around it.
The petals move between colours rather than settling on one. Green at the base where they meet the stem, warming through cream and honey, then flushing apricot at the tips. Fine veins run the length of each petal, visible only because the light is diffuse enough not to burn them out.
At the centre sits the reason for photographing an orchid at all: the lip, curled and frilled at the edge, deep crimson at its throat and freckled with dark spots that scatter outward into pale yellow. A single white anther cap sits above it like a full stop. This is a flower built to be looked at closely, and the picture is made at exactly the distance that rewards it.
Around the subject the depth of field falls away fast. Neighbouring buds hold their form but lose their detail, and the foliage behind reduces to bands of dark green. The result is a photograph with real depth to it — three or four planes receding, none of them fighting the bloom in front.
It reads as warm rather than bright, which makes it easy to place. It suits bedrooms, dining rooms, spa and treatment spaces, and reception walls where a photograph should feel considered rather than decorative.
