White Rose in Shadow
A white rose emerging from deep shadow, photographed close in black and white. Signed archival print, framed and ready to hang
Almost half of this photograph is black. The background falls away completely, and what remains is a single white rose leaning out of the dark toward the light.
Working in monochrome strips a flower of the one thing people usually notice about it. With the colour gone, what is left is form — the way one petal curls back on itself, the sharp fold that runs down the centre of the front petal like a crease in paper, the soft gradient across a surface turning away from the light. The eye has nothing to do but read shape and tone, which is exactly the point.
The lighting is directional and low. It catches the outer petals along their edges, leaving the heart of the bloom in half-shadow, so the rose is never fully revealed. A few small imperfections remain visible on the lower petals — a mark, a torn edge. They have been left alone. A flower photographed as though it were flawless stops being a flower.
At the left the petals dissolve into softness and the darkness takes over entirely. Nothing else is in the frame.
This is the quietest piece in the collection and the most serious. It suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway, or a wall in a room finished in neutrals or dark tones. Being black and white, it will sit against any colour scheme and never date.
