Taj Mahal at Dusk

The monument is painted entirely in shadow. Not a single detail of the white marble is shown — only the outline of the dome, the four minarets, the chattris and the smaller pavilion to the left, cut flat and black against the light behind them.

That light is the subject. A band of pale gold sits low on the horizon where the sun has just gone, and from there the sky climbs through amber into deep crimson and finally into near-black at the corners. Cloud and haze are worked in soft overlapping strokes so the colour has no hard edges anywhere except where it meets the building.

In the lower left, three small figures stand on a dark ridge, looking across at it. They are barely more than marks, and they are what gives the painting its scale — without them the monument could be any size at all.

Painting the Taj as a silhouette is a deliberate refusal. Almost every image of it shows the marble, the reflection, the symmetry, the detail. This one shows none of that and relies entirely on a shape that everyone already recognises, which is both the risk and the point. What is left is the outline, the sky, and three people standing in the dark watching the day end.

The palette runs from pale gold through amber and crimson to black, with nothing cool anywhere in it. On a wall it reads warm and dramatic, and it holds attention from across a room.
