Six checks before you buy a painting online

You cannot touch it, so you check everything else. Pick a check to see what to look for, and what you will find on a House of Arts listing.

1. Who made it. A named artist, with a profile you can read, is the first sign of a real painting. If no one is named, ask why. On House of Arts every painting has a named artist.

2. Original and signed. Check that it is an original, not a print, and that it is signed by hand. We list originals only: no copies, no AI and no prints.

3. A certificate. A certificate of authenticity names the artist and the work. It is the paper that tells the next owner what they have. Ours comes with original artwork.

4. Size. A painting looks very different on a screen than on a wall. Measure the wall, then choose a painting about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Read the size guide

5. Photos. Look for the front, a close-up of the brushwork and the back. If you cannot see them, ask. Colours vary a little between screens, so we can send more photographs on request.

6. Shipping. Ask how it is packed and whether the courier is insured. Our shipping is free across India, and every order is sent with tracked delivery.

Choosing the scale

A small painting whispers. A large one speaks.

Size changes what a painting does in a room as much as its colour or subject. Decide the role first, then the size.

  • A small painting is a quiet accent, good on a shelf, a desk or a narrow wall, and a low-cost way to start collecting.
  • A large painting is the focus of the room. About two-thirds the width of the sofa gives it presence without crowding.
  • Not sure? Go larger than you think. A painting that is too small floats on the wall.

How a painting travels to you.

A painting is the most valuable thing most parcels will ever carry, so we treat it that way. It is packed to protect the work and its frame, sent with tracked delivery, and shipped free across India.

Artists film the packing before dispatch and ship with a courier whose insurance covers the full value of the work. If something is not as listed, we compare it with what the listing stated about quality, size and frame, and decide on a refund or no refund on that basis.

Is it safe to buy paintings online in India?

It is, if you buy from someone who names the artist, lists originals only, and explains how the painting is packed and shipped. Every listing on House of Arts is read by a person before it goes live, and every painting is original, signed and sent with tracked delivery.

Are the paintings really original?

Yes. Every painting is made by hand by the artist and signed, never a print or a reproduction. Original artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Will the painting look the same as the photograph?

Very close, but colours vary a little between screens, and a painting has texture a photograph cannot show. If a colour matters to you, ask for more photographs, or book an appointment and see it in person.

How is the painting packed and delivered?

Packed to protect the work and its frame, and sent with tracked delivery, free across India. Artists film the packing before dispatch and use a courier whose insurance covers the full value of the work.

How do I pay?

By UPI, paid directly to the artist: in full, or 50% in advance with the balance after the painting reaches you. Cash on delivery is also available. Send us the transaction ID and we verify it personally before confirming your order.

What if the painting is not as described?

We compare your complaint with what the listing stated about quality, size and frame, and decide on a refund or no refund on that basis. An honest, complete listing is the best protection for both sides.

What size should I choose?

About two-thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it, hung 6 to 8 inches above its back. On its own wall, keep the centre about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor. A painting that is too small floats on the wall.

Can I see a painting in person before I buy?

Yes. Book an appointment and we will bring a shortlist to your space, or visit the gallery at #915 TDI City, Sector 117, Mohali. Please call or message before you set out, so we can be sure someone is there.
