Three Suns

Three small panels, each one a variation on a single idea: a disc of gold suspended over dark ground.

In the first, two golden orbs hang close together above a landscape of deep maroon and indigo, with a band of gold catching light along the lower edge. In the second, a single sun fills the centre, its surface built from heavy encrusted gold leaf and rays dragged outward into the umber field around it. In the third, one orb sits low on the left over a horizon of red and blue, with a faint gold reflection beneath it.

The panels are heavily worked. Gold leaf is laid on thickly and left broken, so the suns read as encrusted rather than painted, and under a lamp they catch light the way nothing else on a wall does. Beneath them the grounds are built in layers of umber, oxblood and midnight blue, with the weave of the canvas showing through in places. Almost nothing is described — a horizon, a suggestion of hills, a strip of water — and that restraint is what gives the panels their weight.

Read left to right they move through a day: two suns rising, one at its height, one going down. Read as three separate pictures, each stands on its own.

The palette is entirely warm and dark — umber, oxblood, indigo, gold. These are small works that behave like large ones. They suit a study, a hallway, a bedroom, a bar or a reception, and they reward being hung where a lamp can rake across them.
