Tripundra

Temple bells hung across a Shaivite tripundra, painted in gold on a field of burning red and orange. Original acrylic on canvas, signed, framed and ready to hang.

The painting is built on the tripundra — the three horizontal marks of Shiva, here rendered as broad, hard-edged bands of pale gold outlined in black, sweeping down and curving inward to a point at the base like a shield or a temple gate.

Across the centre, four brass temple bells hang from black cords, caught mid-swing. They are the only object painted with real modelling in the whole canvas — warm brown-gold, catching light along their curved shoulders, clappers hanging loose beneath. At the point where the cords cross sits a red disc, marked with a small trishul, holding the bells in place like a knot.

Behind everything, the ground is worked entirely in red and orange, brushed in loose radiating strokes that get hotter toward the centre and darken toward the corners — less a background than a source of light the bells and the mark are lit by.

The painting reduces devotion to three elements: the mark, the bell, and the fire behind them. There is no figure, no landscape, no narrative — only the symbols a temple bell rings to announce, arranged as a single emblem.

The palette is entirely warm, and the composition is symmetrical and centred, which makes it a strong single focal point rather than a piece to group with others.
