The near horse leads with its head lowered and forelegs gathered mid-stride. The second runs shoulder to shoulder behind it, head up and slightly turned. Both are pale, modelled in soft graded charcoal that catches light along the neck, the flank and the haunch and falls away into shadow underneath. The manes and tails are the darkest passages in the drawing — long sweeping strokes pulled out into the air behind them, and the clearest signal of speed in the whole picture.

Ground and sky are worked as one continuous dark field, brushed and blended rather than described. No horizon, no landscape, nothing to fix them anywhere. That decision is what makes the drawing work: with nothing around them to measure against, the horses read as pure movement.

Charcoal is the right medium for this. It can be laid broad and soft for the sweep of a flank, lifted with a cloth to bring a highlight back, then driven hard into the mane. The whole picture is built in tone, with almost no line anywhere in it.

The format is wide and low, which suits the subject and suits the walls it will hang on — above a sideboard, along a staircase, behind a reception desk, or across the long wall of a dining room.
