Both are painted almost entirely in black, the features carved out by white highlights rather than drawn — a brow, the bridge of a nose, a lip, the line of a jaw. The hair is rendered in broad white strokes sweeping back from the forehead. Neither face has eyes; there is no contact, only orientation.

Between them, slate blue. Flat, unbroken, and occupying the middle third of the painting. Nothing happens there, and that is the subject. The two figures are turned toward one another and nothing is crossing the gap.

The handling is deliberately reduced. No modelling beyond the highlights, no background detail, no colour beyond black, white and the one blue. The result reads as poster-like from a distance and as painted up close, where the brushwork in the hair and the slight variation in the blue become visible.

Read it as two people talking, two people refusing to talk, or the same person facing themselves. The painting supports all three and commits to none.

Strong, graphic and high contrast, it holds a large wall on its own and works particularly well above a sofa or in a room otherwise finished in neutrals.
