A priest stands with his arm at full extension, the yak-tail chamar thrown upward and caught mid-sweep, its hairs fanning against the black sky. His face is lifted, jaw set, eyes following the motion. Behind him a line of priests repeats the same gesture, receding down the ghat until the last is barely visible.

They wear crimson and saffron with gold-bordered dhotis. The brass poles are wrapped in strings of light, small bells hang above, and a tricolour lifts on the left. To the right the crowd presses in — hundreds of faces, some with hands joined, some raising phones, most simply watching.

The photograph is made at the moment before the sweep completes. Everything else in the frame is still; the chamar alone is moving, and the slight blur in its hairs is the only motion in the picture. That contrast is what the image is about. A ritual performed on that ghat every evening for as long as anyone can remember, and one man in the middle of one gesture of it.

Shot in available light, at night, without flash. The colour comes entirely from the string lights, the fire below the frame, and the saffron the priests are wearing.

This is a document rather than a decoration, and it belongs where people will look at it properly — a study, a hallway, a reception, a restaurant, a hotel lobby. Anyone who has stood on that ghat will recognise it immediately.
