The photograph sells the work. A phone camera is enough; the light is what matters.

  1. Use daylight, not sunlightNear a window on an overcast day is ideal. Switch the flash off.
  2. Shoot straight onCamera level with the centre of the piece, edges parallel to the frame.
  3. Fill the frameCrop to the artwork, with a hairline of background at most.
  4. Correct to matchAdjust only until the screen matches what is in front of you.
  5. Add two detail shotsBrushwork up close, and the signature.
Tip

A picture on the wall of a real room helps a buyer judge scale. Add it after the plain shots, never instead of them.
