Blue Ocean

A broad tongue of ochre and burnt sienna sweeps in from the right and narrows to a point at the left, with deep blue on both sides of it. Read it as a coastline seen from far above, or as nothing at all — the painting works either way.

The blue is laid on in long curving strokes that follow the shape of the land, so the water appears to be moving around it. Where the two meet, the brush has dragged white and pale cream into the edge: surf, or foam, or simply the place where one colour refuses to give way to the other. Those white edges are the most active passages in the painting and the reason it holds attention.

The land itself is worked with texture. The paint is thicker there, scratched through and scraped back in places, with hints of gold showing in the deeper tones. Against the smooth sweep of the water it reads as solid, weathered ground.

Only two colours carry the whole canvas, and the contrast between them does all the work. Deep cobalt against warm ochre — complementary opposites, which is why the painting reads clearly from across a room and why the two halves refuse to blend into one another.

The format is long and low, and unusually so. It suits the walls most homes have and most paintings ignore: above a sofa or a sideboard, along a corridor, behind a reception desk, above a bed, or spanning the back of a dining room.
