Falling Water

Water breaking white and blue over dark rock, worked in thick impasto with flecks of gold. Original mixed media on canvas, signed, framed and ready to hang.

Water falls diagonally across the canvas, breaking pale blue and white where it meets rock. Dark masses of olive, brown and near-black push up through it — boulders, or banks, or the shadowed sides of a gorge.

The paint is applied thickly and worked while wet. Ridges of impasto catch light along the top edges, and in places the brush has dragged colour off rather than laying it on, leaving the weave of the canvas showing through. The whites are scraped in rather than painted, which is what makes the water look like it is moving.

Scattered across the dark areas are flecks of gold and copper — small, irregular, catching light the way spray does when sun reaches it. They are the reason this painting changes as you move past it.

The right side does something different. There the water smooths into a broad ochre and grey sweep, as though the fall has gathered into a slower current below the drop.

Nothing is drawn. There is no outline anywhere, no horizon, no sky — only the direction of the strokes telling you which way everything is going. Read it as a waterfall in a forest, or as pure movement in blue and brown.

It is a small painting that behaves like a much larger one, and it rewards being hung where a lamp can rake across the surface.

Suited to a study, a hallway, a bedroom, a bar or a reception, and it hangs particularly well in a group with other small framed works.
