One flower, placed low and left, with most of the frame given to water.

The bloom is violet at the tips, paling to lavender through the middle petals, with a crown of yellow stamens at the centre catching the only direct light in the picture. Below it, its own reflection sits dark and broken on the surface.

Around it, lily pads. Some are lit from above and read as pale green, veined and freckled and split along one edge where the leaf has divided. Others sit below the surface, visible only as shapes in the dark. The water between them is almost black, with a band of gold algae running through the upper right where the sun has reached the bottom.

The composition is the reason this works. The flower is nowhere near the centre, and it is small in the frame. Everything else — the pads, the dark water, the single bright patch of gold — exists to make you find it. A tighter crop would have been a picture of a lily. This is a picture of a pond with a lily in it, which is a harder and better thing.

The palette is deep and cool — violet, dark blue-green, near-black — with one point of yellow. That makes it an unusually easy piece to place in rooms finished in cool tones, where warmer botanical work would sit awkwardly.

It suits a bedroom, a study, a spa or treatment room, a consulting room or a reception. It hangs well alone.
