Photographed in a Chandigarh garden in the last hour of light, when the sun sits low enough to pass through the petals rather than fall on them. That is what gives the centre of this rose its glow — the yellow is lit from behind, not from above.

The colour moves outward the way it does in the flower itself: deep butter at the heart, softening to cream through the mid-petals, then a crimson flush along the outer edges where the bloom has been longest exposed. The freckling on the lower petals is left exactly as it was found. It is the part of a rose most photographs tidy away, and it is the part that proves the flower was real and had a life.

Behind it the garden dissolves entirely. A wide aperture reduces the beds to a wash of green and dark red, with two soft points of light where other blooms catch the same sun. Nothing competes with the subject.

The result is a quiet piece rather than a dramatic one. It suits bedrooms, hallways, consulting rooms and reception areas — anywhere a wall should feel warm without demanding attention. It hangs well alone, and equally well as one of a pair or a set of three.
