Abstract — Moon circular composition

The palette is the same in both and the handling is the same: teal and deep blue laid down first, then magenta and crimson driven into it, then gold dragged across the top with a dry brush so it catches the weave of the canvas and skips rather than covers. Nothing is blended. Every colour keeps its own identity, and where they meet they sit against each other rather than mixing.

The left panel is the quieter of the two — more blue, the gold gathered into two broad horizontal strokes across the middle. The right is busier, with magenta pushing up through the centre and the gold broken into flecks across the upper half. Read together they are clearly the same weather seen twice.

The circular crop is what makes these work. A square of this painting would read as a fragment; a circle reads as a whole thing — a planet, a lens, a coin, a moon. It also gives the eye no corner to rest in, so it keeps travelling round the composition.

They are small works with a lot happening in them, and they reward close viewing. The dry-brushed gold in particular changes as the light moves across it.

Hung as a pair they suit a hallway, a study, a bedroom, a stairwell or a reception — anywhere a wall needs two points rather than one. The palette is bold but the scale is modest, which makes them easy to place in rooms that could not take a large canvas.
