The priest stands barefoot on a marigold-covered cloth, head tipped back, both hands raised to his mouth around the conch. He is blowing it. Behind him the whole line does the same, each figure smaller and dimmer than the last until they disappear into the smoke.

Shankhnaad — the sounding of the conch — opens and punctuates the aarti. It is the one part of the ceremony that reaches people who are not watching: the note carries across the water and up the ghats, and everyone within hearing knows the ritual has begun.

This is the hardest thing to photograph at an aarti, because the subject is sound. What the frame can show is the posture it takes to make it — the head thrown back, the elbows lifted, the whole body committed to a single sustained breath. Repeated five times down the line, it reads almost as choreography.

The altars run away to the left: brass lamp stands, tiered deepaks, an open flame burning in a dish, cloths in red and gold. To the right the crowd stands close, many with palms joined, listening rather than looking.

Smoke does the rest. It thickens across the left half of the frame, softens the far end of the ghat into blue haze, and gives the picture a depth that light alone could not.
