The Elder

Shiva and Parvati seated together on Kailash, turned toward one another in conversation. Original pen and ink drawing, signed, framed and ready to hang.

An old woman sits on a length of driftwood with her hands folded in her lap and her eyes closed. Beside her, a round earthenware vase holding two bare branches. A few stones on the ground. Nothing else.

The face carries the drawing. It is drawn with restraint rather than detail — the lines at the mouth, the hollow beneath the cheekbone, the fold of the eyelid, the hair pulled back and falling either side. Enough to know exactly how old she is and that she is not asleep, only quiet.

Below the face, the robe. This is where the labour went. Layer on layer of cloth, drawn entirely in fine parallel hatching that changes direction with every plane — falling straight down the sleeves, spreading in a wide fan across the ground, gathering into dense shadow in the deep folds at her left. The cloth takes up most of the picture and it is the reason the figure feels heavy and settled, as though she has been sitting there some time.

To the right, the driftwood: knotted, split, weathered, its grain drawn stroke by stroke. To the left, the vase and the two branches, spare and almost calligraphic against the white. Three things worn smooth by time, and a person of the same kind.

The ground is barely there, just a few loose horizontal strokes and then bare paper. Nothing is behind her. That emptiness is what gives the drawing its stillness.

Tone is built entirely by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible.

Suited to a study, a meditation or yoga space, a hallway, a consulting room, or a reception. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour, and it rewards being hung where people can stand close.
