The face, at last.
Eyes closed and turned slightly downward. Brow smooth. The tripundra drawn in three bare horizontal bands across the forehead, and between them the third eye — the only eye in the drawing that is open, rendered as a lidded almond with a dark centre.
Above, the jata gathered into a heavy coiled knot at the crown, drawn as hundreds of individual strands turning around each other, with loose locks escaping to fall past the shoulders. The beard is worked the same way, thick and matted, dense with cross-hatching where it gathers at the chin. Rudraksha strands cross the chest below.
To the left, the serpent, hood raised and head lowered, keeping watch while the god does not. To the right, the trishul, standing with its own rudraksha strand tied around the shaft. Behind everything, Kailash: ridge after hatched ridge, snowfields left as bare paper, receding until the mountains dissolve at the edges of the sheet.
The whole drawing sits still. Four earlier works in this series showed the feet, the drum, the beads and the serpent — all fragments, all cropped, all withholding the face. This one gives it, and gives it in meditation rather than in power. Nothing is being destroyed or danced. He is simply sitting, and the mountain is sitting with him.
Tone is built entirely by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible. The white of the paper does the rest.
Suited to a puja room, a meditation or yoga space, a study, or an entrance hall. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour, and it hangs particularly well as the centre of the series.
Original pen and ink on artist-grade paper. Signed by the artist. Supplied mounted and framed under glass with a certificate of authenticity. One of a kind — no reproductions of this drawing are sold.
