Shiva stands on a shelf of rock with his back to us, looking out at the mountain.

The trishul is planted beside him, held loose in the right hand, its shaft running the full height of the drawing. The tiger skin is tied at the waist. The serpent rests at his shoulder. Jata and cloth stream out to the right in the wind, and that movement is the only movement in an otherwise entirely still picture.

Across the valley, Kailash. It is drawn lightly here — a single great peak, hatched on its shadowed face, its lower slopes fading into bare paper. Most of the sheet is left empty. There is no sky, no cloud, no detail in the middle distance, just the air between a figure and a mountain.

The decision that makes this drawing is turning him around. In the other works of this series you are looking at Shiva. Here you are looking with him, at what he is looking at. The face is withheld again, as it was in the early drawings, but for a different reason: not to fragment the figure, but to put you behind his shoulder.

It is the quietest piece in the series and the one with the most space in it.

Tone is built entirely by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible. Here the ink is used more sparingly than anywhere else in the series, and the untouched paper carries most of the picture.

Suited to a meditation or yoga space, a study, a reception, or a hallway where a wall needs calm rather than incident. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour, and it works particularly well hung wide.
