The hand is raised, palm outward, fingers open. Abhaya mudra — the gesture that means do not be afraid.

It is the only moment in this series where Shiva addresses the person looking at the drawing. In every other work he is walking, drumming, counting, sitting, or turned away entirely. Here the eyes are lowered and the head inclined, but the hand is offered forward, and the drawing becomes a transaction rather than an observation.

The trishul is held upright in the left hand, its three blades curving outward, the shaft bound with rudraksha. The serpent rises at the right shoulder. Around the neck, three strands of rudraksha and a heavier beaded collar; more at both wrists and the upper arms. The jata is knotted at the crown with the crescent set into it, and the tripundra with the third eye marked at the brow.

Behind, the Himalaya are drawn more lightly than anywhere else in the series — peaks suggested rather than described, receding to almost nothing at the edges, the middle distance left as bare paper. The lightness is deliberate. Nothing is allowed to compete with the hand.

Tone is built entirely by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible. The bare white of the paper does the work everywhere the ink does not.

Suited to a puja room, an entrance hall, a meditation or yoga space, or a reception where the first thing someone sees should be a welcome. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour.
