Nandi at Kedarnath

Nandi seated above the Kedarnath temple, pilgrims small on the slope below, the Himalaya behind. Original pen and ink drawing, signed, framed and ready to hang.

Nandi fills the right half of the drawing, seated and turned in profile, head lifted. The horns curve back, the ears fall, and heavy strands of bells and rudraksha hang from the neck in three loops. The body is drawn with a light, rounded line — soft where the shoulder turns, denser at the folds of the neck and the hocks of the folded legs. He is enormous and entirely at rest.

Below and to the left, small in the frame, the temple at Kedarnath. The stone shikhara, the steps, the low compound wall, drawn with the same patience but at a fraction of the scale. And around it, dozens of figures — pilgrims reduced to a few strokes each, scattered across the slope, walking up toward the shrine.

That contrast is what the drawing is about. The bull is close and monumental; the temple and the people who came to reach it are far away and tiny. Nandi is not looking at them. He faces the mountain instead, doing what he has always done, which is wait.

Behind everything, the Himalaya rise in hatched ridges, heavier and darker on the left where the rock faces are in shadow, and dissolving into bare paper along the snowfields.

This is the only work in the series with a real place in it, a built structure, and human figures. Where the others show the god or his objects, this one shows the ground where people actually go to find him.

Tone is built entirely by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible.

Suited to a puja room, an entrance hall, a study, or a reception. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour, and it holds a wall well at larger sizes where the small figures can be read.
