A wooden schooner cuts across the canvas under a full spread of sail — six of them, no two the same colour. Deep red at the two highest points, warm gold through the mainsails, and a bright run of orange and green at the stern where the smaller jibs catch the wind. A yellow pennant flies from the topmost mast.

The hull sits low and confident in the water, rust-red and gold, with a handful of tiny figures on deck giving the whole vessel its scale.

The sea is painted flat and saturated — a solid field of green with white breaking at the bow, more graphic than naturalistic. Above it, the sky is classic watercolour: soft blue washes bleeding into white cloud, loose and atmospheric where the boat below is crisp and linear.

That contrast is the whole painting. A tightly drawn, brightly coloured ship set against a sky and sea rendered in the loosest, most traditional watercolour technique. Neither fights the other — the loose sky gives the sharp boat somewhere to sit, and the flat sea gives it a clean line to travel across.

This is a warm, good-humoured painting with nothing difficult in it. It suits a study, a boy’s room, a hallway, a den, an office or anywhere that wants colour and movement without demanding a second look to understand it.
