Buddha Series I — Hand of the Lotus

An upraised palm marked with a lotus, held against a red disc on deep blue — the second in the Buddha series. Original acrylic on canvas, signed, framed and ready to hang.

A single open hand, palm turned upward, fills most of the canvas. The fingers point down and slightly apart, relaxed rather than posed. At the centre of the palm, a small eight-petalled lotus is painted in cream outline with deep red fill — a mark rather than a held object, as if it were drawn into the skin itself.

Behind the hand, a dark red disc sits partly eclipsed by the palm, glowing against a mottled ground of purple, ochre and gold worked in loose, uneven strokes. It reads as a setting sun, a halo, or simply a field of colour the hand rests in front of — the painting does not insist on one reading.

This is the first work in a numbered series, and the choice to show only the hand follows the same logic used elsewhere in devotional art: the part stands in for the whole. An open palm, offered rather than closed, is itself a gesture of giving — and marking it with a lotus, the flower most associated with the Buddha’s teaching, turns an ordinary hand into a symbol of what it might offer.

The palette is warm and earthen throughout — ochre, maroon, and gold, with no cool colour anywhere in the painting.

Suited to a meditation or yoga space, a puja room, a study, or an entrance hall, and intended to be collected as part of a numbered series.
