Three Graces, Reclining

Three women share a courtyard built from washes of sepia and ochre, with stone columns, a carved doorway and a marble bust receding into the haze behind them.

At the centre, one leans back with an arm raised behind her head, eyes closed, her white blouse loose at the waist above a rust-coloured skirt. At the bottom left, a second reclines full length across a patterned shawl, one hand resting flat against it, a rose wrap crossing her shoulder. At the right, the tallest figure stands with her elbow lifted and her head turned aside, in a red bodice and a full skirt washed in gold that catches the light down its pleats.

The painting is built almost entirely from warm tone. Sepia and ochre for the architecture, gold for the standing figure’s skirt, rose and white for the other two — with only the black ink lines of a bare branch at each upper corner to interrupt the palette. Watercolour is left to pool and bleed at the edges of the stonework, so the setting stays soft while the figures, painted with a firmer hand, come forward.

None of the three look at each other or at the viewer. Each is turned inward, mid-gesture, caught in a private moment of rest rather than posed for anyone. The mood is unhurried — an afternoon somewhere warm, with nothing to do and nowhere to be.

It suits a living room, a bedroom, a reading corner or a reception, anywhere that wants warmth and romance rather than a strong single statement.
