Shiva’s Feet — Descent from Kailash

The drawing shows only the feet of Lord Shiva, walking down from the snows of Kailash.

One foot is planted, weight settled, toes spread into the snow. The other is lifted and still travelling, heel raised, about to come down. Above the ankles the legs leave the frame, so the Lord himself is never shown.

That restraint is deliberate, and it follows an old instinct in Indian devotional art. Charan — the feet — have always been enough. Devotees have bowed to charan paduka and charan kamal for centuries precisely because the feet stand for the whole without attempting to contain it. Drawing only what touches the earth says more about the rest than any full portrait could.

Rudraksha strands circle both ankles. Behind, the Himalaya rise in hatched ridges. Underfoot, the snow of Kailash. Everything needed to know who is walking, and nothing more.

The technique is patient and entirely by hand. Tone is built through hatching and cross-hatching, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no wet media anywhere in the drawing. The marks change their job across the sheet: dense crosshatch to model the tendons and the arch of the standing foot, longer parallel strokes to turn the calf, sharp diagonals for the shadowed faces of the mountains, loose broken flicks across the foreground where light catches the snow. Large areas of paper are left untouched — and that emptiness is what makes the snow read as snow.

Ink allows no correction. Every mark here is permanent, made in one pass, which gives the drawing a directness that painting rarely carries.

Suited to a puja room, meditation or yoga space, a study, or an entrance hall where it greets you on the way in. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits comfortably against any wall colour.
