A broad gold ring on a midnight ground. Inside it, a field of deep crimson. Inside that, a blue square. And then the descent begins.
A broad ring of gold on a deep blue ground. Within it, a crimson square set square to the frame, and across that square two gold diagonals running corner to corner, dividing it into four triangles meeting at a single centre.
Across the red field, dozens of small gold points. They are not placed on a grid. They gather more densely toward the centre and thin out toward the edges, so the square appears to be dusted rather than patterned — the one irregular element in an otherwise exact composition, and the thing that keeps the painting from being purely diagrammatic.
Outside the square, four further points sit on the blue at the cardinal directions, and a fifth at the very top, just inside the ring.
The geometry is the oldest in Indian sacred art. A circle for the boundless, a square for the ordered and the earthly, and the diagonals dividing that order into four quarters meeting at a centre — the same logic that governs a temple plan, a mandala, and the vastu purusha mandala laid out before a building is begun.
Three colours do everything: crimson, midnight blue, gold. The gold is the only surface with texture in it, the brush marks left visible in the ring so it catches light differently through the day.
This is the quietest of the yantra paintings and the easiest to live with. Symmetrical, centred and calm, it suits a puja room, a meditation or yoga space, an entrance hall or a study, and works best hung alone on a plain wall with space around it.
