Kailash — Shiva Enthroned

Shiva sits on bare rock, one knee drawn up and the other leg extended, the pose relaxed rather than formal. The right hand rests on the raised knee, holding a rudraksha mala that hangs loose and swings free below. The tiger skin falls across the lap. Armlets of rudraksha circle both arms.

Above the shoulder, the serpent, hood raised. Behind the head, the jata bound into a knot at the crown, with a great sweep of matted locks falling the full length of the body to the rock below — the longest continuous passage of hatching in the drawing, and the thing that gives the figure its scale. To the right, planted in the stone, the trishul with the damru tied at the shaft.

And then the mountain. Kailash is drawn as much as the god is: broken faces of rock, hatched shadow in the crevices, snowfields left as untouched paper. The peaks fall away to left and right, and the top third of the sheet is left completely empty — the sky, given as nothing at all.

That emptiness is the point of the composition. The figure is not placed against a background; the figure and the mountain are the same subject. He sits as the rock sits. Ashutosh, easily pleased, needing nothing.

Where earlier drawings in this series pressed close — a hand, a throat, a face — this one steps back and shows the whole. It is the drawing that puts the rest in context.

Tone is built entirely by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible.

Suited to a puja room, a meditation or yoga space, a study, a reception, or an entrance hall. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour, and it works particularly well at scale.
