Boat of Desire

A wooden boat tipped against a violet sky full of stars, the last of the sunset burning behind it. Original acrylic on canvas, signed, framed and ready to hang.

A single wooden hull fills most of the canvas, tilted hard to the right, its prow rising against the sky. It is beached, or it is leaning into a wave — the painting does not say which, and that ambiguity is the whole picture.

The hull is painted in deep reds and browns, the planking following the curve of the bow, with black gunwales and a row of dark ports running the length of it like stitching. The paint is laid on with visible direction, so the surface reads as timber rather than as flat colour.

Behind it, the sky does two things at once. The upper two thirds are deep indigo and violet, scattered with hundreds of small white stars — night, already arrived. The lower third is still burning: a hard band of orange and gold at the horizon, with magenta and crimson bleeding upward into the dark. The whole transition happens across a few inches of canvas, and it is the most difficult passage in the painting.

At the bottom, a strip of near-black water.

What makes it work is that the boat is unlit. The light is entirely behind it, so the hull is read as mass rather than detail, and the sky does all the talking. There is no shoreline, no figure, no other vessel. Just a boat between the last of the day and the first of the night, and nobody in it.

This is a large statement work and it needs space. It reads powerfully from across a room and it will set the tone of whatever wall it hangs on — a living room, a lobby, a stairwell, a hotel lounge or a boardroom.
