Vasuki — The Serpent at the Throat

The serpent Vasuki coiled at the throat of Lord Shiva, hood raised, among strands of rudraksha. Original pen and ink drawing, signed, framed and ready to hang.

The drawing shows a throat, a raised chin, and the serpent coiled around them. Above the jaw, nothing — the face is left outside the frame entirely.

The snake enters from the right, its body wrapping the neck, and rises on the left with the hood spread and the head turned back toward the viewer. The scales are drawn individually across the whole length of the body, curving with the form so the coil reads as round rather than flat. On the hood the pattern shifts: fine banding down the throat, two dark markings, and then the eye — the only point in the drawing that looks back at you.

Beneath the serpent, three strands of rudraksha. Each bead ridged and furrowed and drawn separately, catching the light differently as the strands fall across the collarbone. Above and to the right, the heavy ear ring and the beginning of the jata.

Everything in the picture converges on the throat. In the tradition that is exactly the right place to look: this is the throat that held the poison churned from the ocean, and the reason Shiva is called Neelkanth. The serpent is not a threat here. It rests.

The technique is the same discipline as the rest of the series. Tone built by hand through hatching and cross-hatching in ink, one line at a time, with no shading, no wash and no correction possible. Large areas of paper are left untouched, and it is that bare white that gives the drawing its air.

Suited to a puja room, a meditation or yoga space, a study, or an entrance hall. Being tonal rather than coloured, it sits against any wall colour, and it hangs particularly well beside the other drawings in the series.
